10 Kids’ Items to Never Buy New Again

Why not buy them new? Because it saves you money, is better for the environment and because your kids really don’t care.

Win-win? I think so.

Easter baskets. These things are everywhere. Tie a bow on it. Voilà! An Easter basket not headed for the landfill.

Craft project supplies. You can find old pattern blouses to cut up for fabric swatches, bags of old buttons, beads, yarn… There are so many ways to upcycle thrift store products. Use your imagination. It’s not only better for the environment, but your pocket-book, Hit up your local thrift shop and shop around. (Pinterest search: upcycle craft projects for kids)

Clothes. I’m weary of buying new clothes anymore considering formaldehyde has been found on clothes from places like Old Navy, Target’s Circo brand, Baby Gap, Gymboree, Carters and Osh Kosh B’gosh. How many washes does it take to get that out? Read more about formaldehyde on baby clothes:

Books. Books are often marked down 10x or more the retail value. Yes, please!

Baby gear. High chairs, strollers, baby carriers, bassinets, swings, play pins…Often, many items sold on Craigslist have only been used once. Sure, you might want that brand new baby gear, but how about putting that money saved toward a college fund or family vacation?

Halloween costumes. Again, many of these have only ever been worn once. CHA-CHING!

Waldorf, Montessori, or Reggio Emilia approved toys. You can save an exorbitant amount of cash by buying your wood and natural items second-hand. You may have to travel off the beaten path because great wood figurines, bowls, boxes, etc are typically NOT with the kids’ stuff.

All other toys. Save a toy. Take ’em home and clean ’em up. Another money saver and toy soul saved.

Children’s furniture. Do Mother Earth a favor by reusing items that might otherwise be sitting in the dump. Some things only need a little paint or clean up and you’ve saved hundreds of dollars!

Musical Instruments. One day they want to play guitar and the next they don’t. Why not try it out used, first?
